Mimosas, Samosas & Malaria by Katlynn Brooke

Continuing the saga of her unusual childhood in what was then Rhodesia, Katlynn Brooke, with raw honesty shares the years that shape the rest of her life.

In Tea, Scones and Malaria we meet Katlynn, a young naive girl with a passion for the outdoors, shy but adventurous, a bit of a dreamer and despite a very caring, but controlling father, part of a close loving family.

The loneliness of living and working, while still in her teens, in a small community leads Katlynn to look for escape to wider and more interesting pastures. Marrying too young with an innocence that didn’t equip her for a charming but abusive husband, she leaves Rhodesia for South Africa.

Learning how to survive, Katlynn leaves her husband and embarks on a career at the American Embassy meeting Jon, who, despite doubts, becomes her new husband. They are great friends and travel and party together.

However, being transferred to exotic India and Indonesia, creates unexpected problems. Her way of coping was drinking, his was ignoring her.

The descriptions of, in particular their visit to Victoria Falls in 1976 during the early days of the Bush war, and of life in Bombay and Jakarta are excellent, with vivid recollections of the sense and scenes of the eras.

Travelling to Krakatoa, majestic temples and enjoying Singapore Slings at Raffles, the people they befriend and the excitement of it all does not compensate for a lonely and empty marriage.

It is when Katlynn is diagnosed, and accepts, that she is addicted to alcohol and is forced into rehab she realises she has to start life all over again.

With great honesty about her addiction, she explains what and why she came to this disastrous stage in her life.

It takes a brave woman to open herself to others, becoming an inspiration to many people.

Life does take a turn for the better when she meets and marries her darling Charlie. An emotional roller-coaster ride through life, this memoir will resonate with many readers – and be encouraged by it.
